Michael Barr ’07 Memorial Scholarship Application
The Michael Barr ‘07 Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Michael Patrick Barr, Jr. who died on January 1, 2022, from sudden cardiac arrest due to an unknown arrhythmia at the age of 33. Michael was a student athlete at St. Thomas Aquinas High School excelling in football and basketball playing Varsity all four years while maintaining average grades throughout his tenure at STA. The bonds he had with the people he met while attending STA developed into lifelong friendships with many. He had a strong sense of self confidence but was very selfless. His coaches, teammates, and the overall well-being of the game became his drive while being the best he could be. He thought nothing of making someone else shine knowing that his actions would benefit the outcome of the game. He had strong connections with his teachers and worked hard to maintain his ability to learn and play sports in a positive way. Michael always lived life big and with a lot of love and passion for his family and friends.
A scholarship will be awarded to a well-rounded student athlete looking to experience all that St. Thomas Aquinas has to offer. Awarding of the Michael Barr Memorial Scholarship is contingent on certain financial criteria and a completed application. Additionally, applicants are required to submit an essay demonstrating who they are today and what they hope for in the future. Please submit a one-page essay that addresses the following topic: What are you passionate about? What is the one thing that you are most excited to do each day? Our hope is that your response will give the Barr family an honest portrayal of who you are today and what you hope for in the future so that they can feel a sense of connection to the applicant, just as Michael had done with so many people while a student at STA.
Your application will be reviewed by STA to make sure the financial criteria are met and those qualified applications and essays will be provided to Michael Barr’s family who will make the final decision.
