The Super Bowl may have had the country’s attention last evening but the heart of our St. Thomas Aquinas community was with our Saints at the DII State Championships at Dartmouth. A great group of girls, who spend much of their time affirming each other, ran their best race for STA and for one another.
Round-Up: the STA girls team (Maddie Baughn '18, Chelsea Cooper '21, Grace Finley '19 and Sarah Brandon '18) improved their time by “an astonishing 22 seconds to place eighth,” Coach Ginny Richburg said with pride. Minutes later, Mady Buchalski ’20 landed her best shot put of the season with three throws over 38 feet. Placing second overall, Mady is on her way to the New England Championships in Boston on March 4th.
Adrienne Bevins '19 dashed by in the 55m and recorded her best time ever (7.79) and then ran to cheer on Maddie Baughn who, after having just run the 800 m, put down a near personal best in the 3000 m with 11:30. Following quickly behind was Sarah Brandon who ran the 600 m in 1:48, placing 9th overall.
The girls 4x400 relay improved their time by five seconds only to then turn and root for the 4x200 STA team (Chelsea Cooper, Emma Corson '19, Ana Paula Terrazas '19 , Adrienne Bevins) who sprinted to a very close finish with Coe Brown.
As Coach Richburg reflected, “We took them to the big palace and they danced wonderfully.” Congratulations to a very special group of athletes who ran their best- both as individuals and as teammates.
And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us... -Hebrews 12:3
