Under today’s beautiful afternoon sky, STA facilitated a special blessing over all of its Spring Athletes.
Athletic Director, Emmaline Emerson, began by sharing her faith testimony and reflected on how, when she was a student, her track & field event had become her primary and overwhelming focus that left her feeling empty.
"Once you've built your whole life around this one thing that has kept you going... when that's not there anymore, you don't know where else to turn. That was the position I was put in. I did not have very healthy outlets by which to help myself through a very challenging time. I just felt a drift. I didn't really feel like there was any purpose left."
Once her team captain brought her to a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting, she realized she had been putting her faith and her entire being into something human, something worldly and this was at the root of her unhappiness.
"There was so much more. I could put my faith in God and I could put my strength in Him. Philippians 4:13 became a mantra: ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me’ because it is through Christ that I found the strength to move forward."
After Mrs. Emerson's reflections, Fr. Andrew Nelson from St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Mary Parishes prayed over our athletes. He engaged the team members of each sport, sprinkled them with holy water, and blessed them in their upcoming practices and competitions. The time he spent with each athletic team demonstrated his genuine care and commitment to nourishing STA's culture of Catholic identity and its intentional integration into the athletic program. Creating a culture that praises both the Catholic faith and our students’ athleticism is alive and powerful.
The development of STA students includes strengthening them in mind, body, and spirit. Today was a giant step forward in helping our coaches and athletes fully understand the St. Thomas Aquinas High School mission and how it prepares them for lifelong contentment and success. We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful afternoon and we're not just talking about the weather.
