Elese Sommerova is an alpine skier who competes internationally for Czech Republic. Her last result is the 30th place for the women's slalom in Meiringen Hasliberg during the season 2021/2022. She competes in giant slalom and slalom.
When learning to ski at age 5, Elese Sommerova never expected to be headed to China 15 years later to compete in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games- nor could her mother. STA Alumna, Jennifer (Vachon) Sommer ’95, shared the exciting news (and her tremendous pride) with our STA community recently.
“Elese is my oldest daughter (age 20). My husband is Czech and Elese will represent the Czech Republic in the Alpine ski events (slalom, giant slalom).
She learned to ski at Attitash (age 5) and raced for Gunstock Ski Club. Eventually, she moved to a private ski academy. The ski academy did not work out as well as hoped and we returned to Europe.
Elese has been a member of the Czech National Team for the past four years. She trains on snow from July to April, with many sessions starting at 6am! The remaining months are spent on fitness (weights, biking etc).
Her journey has been incredible. The greatest lesson she had from the academy is to persevere and trust in her talent. Thus far, her journey has been full of ups and downs. There have been many moments to celebrate and many moments to cry. I am amazed at the amount of hard work and determination she has showed thus far. When things get tough, she rises to the challenge.
While I am unable to go to the games due to the Covid situation in China, I am so happy that her dreams are coming true!”
The entire St. Thomas Aquinas community shares in the Sommer Family’s excitement and pride and look forward to watching Elese compete in the upcoming Games.
*Elese is also cousin to current sophomore Hailey Brown.
