Mighty Mighty Math Team
April 17, 2008The STA Math Team recently competed in the 36th Annual State Mathematics Contest at Plymouth State University. This competition, sponsored by the New Hampshire Teachers of Mathematics (NHTM), brings together over 500 students from over 50 schools. The frenzied figuring begins with all competitors gathered in the PSU Student Union building, getting suitably jacked up on Mountain Dew and Dunking Donuts! Most schools are also decked out in their “uniforms”, but none any finer than our STA “There is No Off-Season” T-shirts and sweat pants ensemble! From there, the 10 mathletes from each school are sent off to the various testing rooms to solve problems in 6 different categories: Recreational Math, Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Advanced Math and a Team problem and essay.
This year’s STA team, consisting of Seniors Matt Carr, Owen Derby and Kate Foy, Juniors Hanna Ju, Raghav Joshi, Mike Myhre, Michael Tran and Luke Zagar, and Sophomores Lindsey Howard and Jacqui Kaneb scored 283 (out of a possible 356 )points to earn a proud 4th place among the 16 schools in our division. In the overall rankings, we placed 11th out of 54 schools – very well done! This was STA’s best finish in modern times and speaks highly of the students on our Mighty, Mighty Math Team. This accomplishment also points to the successes we are experiencing every day in our classrooms. Special congratulations are in order to Matt Carr and Jacqui Kaneb for scoring 32 out of a possible 36 points on their respective tests, putting them in the top 10% of students statewide. Already, we are building from this result as we prepare for next year’s competition. Go Mathletes!
