
Scholarships
Lucille Anderson Scholarship Fund This scholarship is sponsored and supported by the faculty and staff of St. Thomas. It is named for Lucille Anderson, past chair of the English Department, who was a respected colleague. This fund provides assistance to at least one member in each sophomore, junior, and senior class.
Robert G. Blenk Scholarship Robert Blenk spent his life devoted to his family and his faith. He was a man who believed in and supported Catholic education and was proud to have six of his eight children graduate from St. Thomas. His family established this scholarship in his memory. This award is made to a student who is in financial need, who is serious about furthering his or her education, and who has shown qualities of leadership and strong character.
Linus Buhrman ’93 Scholarship Fund One of Linus’s last wishes was to be able to provide an endowed scholarship to incoming freshmen at St. Thomas who have financial need. Having succumbed to cancer in July 2002, Linus’s family and friends are working to establish a permanent endowment in his name in order to make his dream come true.
Bruce Connell Scholarship This scholarship was established in 2005 by the family of Bruce Connell, a former St. Thomas parent. An award in the amount of $1,000 is to be made to one student of the incoming 9th grade class. Financial need must be demonstrated through the school financial aid process. Student applicants must submit a one page essay on: How will my Catholic education at St. Thomas help me make a difference in the future.
Megan DeColfmacker ’99 Scholarship Fund Established in memory of Megan DeColfmacker ’99 by Michael and Laurie Connell Steinberg ’71 and employees of Relyco Corp., this scholarship is awarded to a member of the senior class based on financial need and a 500-word written essay on what he/she will do to make the world a better place.
Karen Devriendt Scholarship Fund Established in the summer of 2006 by Karen’s former students and volleyball players. The first scholarship will be awarded in the spring of 2007.
The Gove Group Scholarship Established in May 2005, this $2,500 yearly scholarship is awarded to a student of the incoming 9th grade class who shows substantial financial need. This scholarship will follow that student through all four years providing they meet the financial qualifications established by St. Thomas.
Pauline Mercier Merrill ’70 Endowment Established in memory of Pauline Mercier Merrill ’70 by her husband Carl Merrill, this award is made to students who have demonstrated need and who anticipate further education in the area of elementary or secondary education. An essay that states this interest must accompany the application.
John J. and Dorothy M. Nyhan Endowment Established in honor of John J. and Dorothy M. Nyhan by their son William J. Nyhan, this award is made to a student who has demonstrated financial need and proven academic performance.
Ronald A. Peterson & Martha Peterson Naples Educational Trust A sum of $15,000 was given to St. Thomas in June 2003 to establish the above scholarship. This scholarship will provide financial assistance in the amount of $1,000 per year to students at St. Thomas, specifically St. Michael’s parishioners and or South Berwick, ME residents. Should there be no applicants from the specified area, any student as seen appropriate by the school will be eligible for the award. Applicants must meet the financial aid requirements established by the school and write an essay on why they want to attend St. Thomas.
Michael Sakowski ’73 Scholarship Established in November 2004 by the Class of 1973, this scholarship is funded by a yearly appeal. This scholarship is granted to students in any grade level who demonstrate financial need beyond the set cap for grants. The Mike Sakowski ’73 Scholarship is intended to make up that difference between what St. Thomas is able to grant and the actual cost of tuition.
Mary Jane Keane and Dave Dupont, both classmates of Mike’s will receive contact from a member of the financial aid committee in the Spring with information on the students eligible for this scholarship. Mary Jane and Dave will decide which students will receive the Sakowski Scholarship as well as the amount of the grant. “It is important that contributors to this scholarship know that good kids, who otherwise would not be able to attend St. Thomas, have been helped.”
